Old Stump?  Fossilized Mushroom?  Japanese Fountain?

This odd formation struck me a reminiscent of Japanese art.
In fact, I'm not really sure what it was.  It looked like wood
but had tiers, like a fountain.  Might have been some sort
of fossilized mushroom.  It was quite large, about 12 or 14
inches in diameter.
